Female infertility can be overcome with techniques like losing or gaining weight where applicable, knowing when the egg cell is ready and when to have sex, reducing stress, having a nutritional plan, and avoiding fertility hazards like alcohol, caffeine and nicotine.  Overcoming infertility can be a major problem for women.  Infertility has been defined as “the inability to become pregnant after having unprotected sex for a full year.”

Factors that Contribute to Female Infertility

Many factors may lead to female infertility.  These include sexually transmitted diseases, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome, hormone imbalances and the lack of healthy eggs.  For some women, infertility results from birth defects of the uterus or the Fallopian tubes, or failure of ovulation.

Know when the egg is ready– Check the cervical mucus.  Female fertility is at its peak five days before and one day after ovulation.  When the cervical mucus has become thin and clear, ovulation is about to begin.  Thin mucus makes it easier for the sperm to reach the egg.  Periodically wipe the vaginal area with tissue paper.  If secretion looks like egg white, it means that you are ready to get pregnant.

Secure an ovulation testing kit from the pharmacy.  Some require urine samples.  Others test the saliva.  If, after three months, the test kit fails to indicate ovulation, see your doctor.

Lose or gain weight where needed– body fat produces estrogen, too much of which impairs the ability to conceive.  Being too thin, on the other hand, causes female infertility.  Without enough body fat, the uterus will have a hard time receiving fertilized egg.

Reduce stress where necessary– exercising for more than an hour a day interferes with ovulation.  Research have also shown that women who have stressful jobs requiring hectic pace have trouble getting pregnant.  Try meditation or yoga to fight stress.

Embark on a nutritional plan– female infertility may be linked to nutrient deficiencies.  Always consult a doctor or a health care expert before taking multivitamins or food supplements.  Nutrients that are important to women wishing to gain fertility include folic acid, iron and iodine.

Check your medicine cabinet– avoid antihistamines and decongestants, as they reduce the amount of cervical mucus, which assist sperm to reach the egg.  Do not take ibuprofen or aspirin.  These anti-inflammatory drugs can interfere with ovulation, and prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine wall.  For pain relief, switch to paracetamol.

Timing– during ovulation, have sex at least once a day for three days.  If you’ve not tracked ovulation, have sex every other day from day 8 to day 20 (counting from the first day of your last period).  Sperm have a three-day lifespan.  By having sex often, chances that sperm are ready when ovulation happens are increased.

Stop smoking– smoking not only increases infertility in both sexes, it also increases the risk of miscarriage.  The number of healthy eggs dwindles rapidly in smokers.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine– avoiding alcohol and caffeine can boost fertility in both sexes
